Stryker & Company replaced the outdoor toilet building and stabilized the dock anchoring system at Pine Creek in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park for the National Park Service. The project required removing 2,200 gallons of septic waste by hand, sandblasting and recoating the septic tank, and rebuilding the dock system to withstand fluctuating water flows from the Blue Mesa hydroelectric dam, all at a remote site accessible only on foot.
What Made This Project Different
- Removed 2,200 gallons of septic waste in 5-gallon buckets into 200-gallon totes, flown out by helicopter
- Sandblasted and polyurea-coated the septic tank to extend its service life
- Built a new pressure-treated and Trex deck with galvanized handrails and replaced the toilet
- Stabilized the dock anchoring system, concrete anchors, new galvanized cables, and a 30-foot galvanized stabilizing arm, to handle fluctuating flows from the Blue Mesa hydroelectric dam
- Every workday required hiking down 276 steps to the remote site, with materials and demolition debris moved by helicopter
